I’m sorry, but I just don’t get it. Why a national (Federal) campaign when the future of Teacher Librarians is a state issue? The DEET can only assist the cause of school libraries if the responsibility for Education is removed from State administration.

If the Feds are pursuaded to increase the education budget to the states, there is still no guarentee that any financial ‘bonuses’ will end up improving information literacy outcomes, library collections, clerical support, etc. Under the current system, Principals will still have Discretionary Powers over budget dispersion at local level.

There are probably many others with the same question …

Hi Amanda,
I’m sure many teachers and TLs are asking the same question. You are quite right, there are many issues to be dealt with on the state level, but with a federal election in the offing, and given the strong input of the federal government in the initial development of school libraries in the 70s, at this stage we are focusing on the common state concerns of staffing and funding. Please explore our website for further information on building quality school libraries as a national concern. Thanks for your input,
Georgia
